Looking for a peaceful way to immerse yourself in the French language and culture? Discover some of Montpellier’s most beautiful parks and gardens to explore during your stay.
As a French language coach and host for immersion programs, I have met many students from all over the world. Many of my students have been fascinated by French wines, French gastronomy, and French architecture. However, I once hosted a student who was passionate about French gardens and parks in particular.
During her stay, she mentioned that she had always wanted to visit the parks in Montpellier. In fact, she visited all the parks and gardens in Montpellier mentioned in this list, meticulously took pictures, and kept a journal of her visits during her immersion stay. This intrigued me and I inquired further about her passion for parks and gardens. She explained that French parks and gardens are known around the world for their designs and symmetrical patterns. This was news to me, so I decided to do some research on Google.

My research led me into a whole new world. Little did I know that French gardens, or rather le jardin à la française, are known all over the world! It is a gardening style based on symmetry and the principle of imposing order on nature. The Gardens of the Chateau de Versailles exemplify this concept perfectly.
If you are passionate about French gardens or simply enjoy relaxing in serene parks, here are 5 parks and gardens you can visit in Montpellier during your French immersion program:
Les Jardins de l’Esplanade
This garden is easily accessible as it is located in the city center. Located just beside the Place de la Comédie, Montpellier’s central square, the park is filled with small winding paths, trimmed green grass, a small pond, and beautiful flowers and shrubs. All this just a stone’s throw from shops, cafés, and the Polygone shopping centre. The towering trees will provide you with cool respite from the bright sunshine of Montpellier after your shopping spree. Many street artists, students, and lovebirds often take a leisurely break on its benches.

Le jardin des plantes (The Botanical Garden)
Montpellier has one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe. It was the first one established in France and it served as a model for designing the other botanical gardens in France. It has approximately 2,680 unique species of plants. This garden belongs to the University of Montpellier and is free to visit. Whether you are a science or botany student, or simply looking for a beautiful escape from the city, will definitely enjoy your visit.
If you are particularly interested in gardens, you can also take a look at the events organized by the Amis du Jardin des Plantes. The association regularly offers a variety of activities and guided informational visits, including conferences, contests, and even beginner-friendly information sessions in entomology (the study of insects), organized in collaboration with local horticultural and natural history groups. Their events are a great way to learn more about the gardens as well as connect with the local community.
Domaine d’O
Located outside of Montpellier’s city centre, the Domaine d’O is certainly worth the trip. It is easily accessible by public transport. The Domaine d’O Park consists of an 18th-century castle, a theatre and an outdoor amphitheater. However, the garden dates back to the 11th century. The castle and its gardens are classified as important historical monuments by the government. You will definitely enjoy walking among the geometrically organized gardens, pools, and fountains.

Les Rives du Lez
Are you into jogging? If so, then Les Rives du Lez is perfect for you! Les Rives du Lez, is not technically a garden; it is a long, lush green strip along the banks of the Lez river that runs through Montpellier. In other words, it is a long park along the river that stretches all the way to the beautiful sandy beaches of Montpellier. The trail is located just five minutes’ walk from the city centre and includes a cycling lane as well. For those who prefer to bike, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing ride under the shade of the trees.

La Promenade Royale du Peyrou
La Promenade Royale du Peyrou is another park located a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of the city center. Built between the 17th and 18th centuries, this calm park is also labeled as a historical monument by the government. La Promenade Royale du Peyrou is a large esplanade filled with lush green lawns, on the outskirts of the city’s historic old town. Directly across from the Peyrou esplanade you will find the Arc de Triomphe and the Château d’eau (water tower). From the Château d’eau, located at the back of the promenade, you will find a stunning panoramic view of Montpellier and the ancient arches of a Roman aqueduct.
If you enjoy spending time outdoors, these gardens and green spaces offer the perfect setting to read, stroll, or simply unwind during your stay. Whether you feel like relaxing in the shade or sparking up a conversation with a local, these parks are must-visit spots during your French immersion program.
