Thinking of moving to Montpellier or just curious about life in the South of France? As an expat, here are the things I love the most about this city.
When I first arrived in Montpellier, it was to study French and live with a host family. The month flew by and I promised myself I would find a way to return.
Now, over 4 years later, I have returned and have been living, studying, and working in this wonderful city for nearly a year. As an international student and expat, there are many things I appreciate about this unique city, from its relaxed lifestyle and serene green spaces to its international atmosphere and many interesting events.
Living here has been a whole different experience and over time, I’ve discovered that it’s not just a place to earn my degree. Here are the things I appreciate most as an expat.

1 – A city made for walking
Montpellier’s city centre is compact, which means you can get almost anywhere on foot. Combined with free public transport, you quickly realize you don’t need a car to enjoy everything the city has to offer.
You will find many locals wandering the streets, shopping and exploring local boutiques, or spending hours on the terraces, on the weekends and during the week alike. The new tram line has been an excellent addition to the city and made the city (and its surrounding areas) even more accessible.

2 – Green spaces everywhere
Upon arriving in Montpellier over 4 years ago, one of the first things I noticed is that green spaces are everywhere! Whether you’re looking to go for a run, have a picnic, read a book, or just relax outside, there’s always a quiet space nearby.
My favourite parks include Le Jardin des Plantes (a staple for any Montpelliérain), Parc Montcalm for exercise, and walking along the Rives du Lez all the way to Lattes or the sea on weekends.

3 – Day-trip adventures are effortless
If you want a change of scenery, there are many beautiful and unique towns and villages to discover just outside the city. Getting to most of these charming towns and other areas in Montpellier’s surroundings is effortless thanks to the large public transit network. A short drive or bus ride takes you to the hiking trails of Pic Saint-Loup, where the views are breathtaking. In warmer months, the sea is just a short trip away and easily accessible by tram or bus.
Some of my favourite places I have visited include the picturesque Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, the charming city of Nîmes, whose history dates back to the Roman Empire, or the lively coastal town Sète.
4 – An international atmosphere that makes you feel at home
Montpellier is surprisingly international for its size. It’s a destination for visitors, as well as expats and students from all around the world. There are numerous events and intercultural exchanges that make it easy to meet new people, whether you speak French fluently or have just started learning.
One of the most popular language exchanges is held at Café de la Panacée every Wednesday evening, bringing together a diverse group of individuals from all walks of life, looking to meet other internationals and practice their French (or other languages). It’s reassuring to know that, as a newcomer, you can feel connected almost instantly, with a variety of events available depending on your interests.
5 – A relaxed, yet affordable lifestyle
Compared to other regions I’ve lived in in France, Montpellier has a noticeably calm, easygoing energy. The pace of life in the South of France is known for its relaxed character, and Montpellier is no exception. There’s room to enjoy the small moments, such as a casual evening with friends after work.
On top of this, the city offers great value: free public transport for its residents, reasonably priced restaurants, and a steady stream of free or affordable cultural events throughout the year. Locals are friendly and open as well, making it easy to see why life here feels both relaxed and enjoyable.
6 – The terrace culture
The terraces in Montpellier are woven into the city’s lifestyle. Almost every café or restaurant has outdoor seating, and people naturally gather outside year-round. In the warmer months, the city completely transforms and these terraces become the go-to meeting spots. Whether it’s to chat with a friend over a coffee or enjoy dinner watching the sunset, I find myself easily spending hours outside on the terraces. These spaces make Montpellier feel social and alive, no matter the day of the week.

7 – The vibrant, unique energy
Many cities in the South of France offer a calm Mediterranean vibe, but nothing quite compares to Montpellier’s energy. As a student and an expat, I appreciate that the city is young and vibrant, without ever feeling overwhelming. Students fill parks, cafés, and libraries, bringing a lively, creative energy that makes the city feel inspiring. Even if you’re not a student, this energy is contagious and is reflected in the wide range of events organized year-round. The city has something to offer for everyone, whether you’re into sports, art, improving your French, cuisine, or more!
For me, Montpellier isn’t just the city where I live, but one where I’ve seamlessly integrated into the local way of life. Its green spaces, surrounding nature, international community, terraces, and relaxed energy all contribute to a vibrant and fulfilling lifestyle.
For anyone considering moving here, or even just visiting, it’s the kind of place where you can feel at home while discovering something new every day. Come and experience the magic of Montpellier for yourself!
